First Grade- Quarter One
UNIT 1- Launching the Writer's Workshop This unit is intended to get students right into writing while establishing the procedures of your Writer's Workshop. UNIT 2- Writing for Readers In this unit, students will continue to write small moment stories while learning to utilize writing conventions within their writing. This unit works to balance students' attempts to create interesting small moment stories while using conventions to make their writing easier for others to read. This unit will highlight the use of classroom tools, the use of spelling strategies, the use of rereading when writing, and the use of writing partners to help young writers share personal stories clearly and concisely. 100 Writing Prompts - Has 100 writing prompts in a list like format. Kids will need a separate sheet of paper to write their story. Just Write- has writing prompts one per page with space for the kids to write their story. First Grade- Quarter Three UNIT 5- Writing All-About Books Using Conventions This unit is designed to teach children to use writing conventions to make their writing clear while learning to write informational texts that teach others about a topic. UNIT 6- Author's As Mentors This unit is designed to teach students to study mentor texts, to learn writing crafts students can incorporate within their own narrative writing.

Second Grade- Quarter One UNIT 1- Launching the Writer's Workshop This unit is intended to get students right into writing while establishing the procedures of your Writer's Workshop. UNIT 2- Narrative Writing with Small Moments In this unit, students will continue writing narrative stories that are focused on a small moment, but now they will work hard to select topics that are meaningful or stand out. They will study Master Writers and learn how to notice, name and determine the author's intent for using that craft. Students will work to determine their own intentions for their stories. For example, Do I want my readers to laugh?, feel worried?, feel sorry for me?, or enjoy beautiful images?. This is essential to helping students know when and where to use the craft moves they are discovering to enhance their stories and when they do not match their intent. Second Grade- Quarter Three UNIT 5- Writing Poetry The focus of this unit is to expose students to another genre of writing- poetry. In this unit students will choose topics that are meaningful to them, and look at everyday objects in a different way. They will think carefully about word choice and use precise wording to match their intent. They learn that poets use patterns and repetition to enhance meaning and the sound of their poem. They will learn that poetry has different structures and those structures impact the "feel" of the poem. UNIT 6- Writing and Revising Realistic Fiction In this unit, students use what they have learned about writing personal narratives and bringing their stories to life while adding the dimension of developing a fictional character, understanding story structure, and writing several books about one main character. Students take what they have learned in the poetry unit about word choice and punctuation and use these skills within this unit. Students will use descriptive details, dialogue, actions, and feelings as well as provide a sense of closure. This moves them towards the third grade narrative standard. |
First Grade- Quarter Two
UNIT 3- Opinion Writing In this unit, students will learn to form opinions and share reasons for their opinions with others by writing letters and giving informational speeches. Students will see writing as a vehicle for change as they work to persuade others. UNIT 4- How To and All-About Writing In this unit, young writers learn about procedural informational writing. Students will first be immersed in this writing type through discussion and exploration of many mentor texts. Then students will begin writing their own how-to booklets, learning about the necessary components of a how-to text while writing. Students will learn that how-to texts have an introduction, materials page, detailed step pictures and step sentences which are sequenced using numbers or ordinal words like first, second, third, and a closing sentence. Students will learn to use precise and clear action words when describing each step so that their how-to booklets are easy to follow. UNIT 7- Author's Choice in Writing This unit is designed to be taught at the start of the fourth quarter of first grade when students have had multiple opportunities to generate different types of writing: fictional stories, informational All Abouts and How To's, persuasive writing, lists, letters, etc. Students choose what type of writing they will focus on. UNIT 8 - Writing Like a Scientist or Historian This unit continues work that students began in Second Quarter. Students will learn to form opinions and share reasons for their opinions with others by writing letters and giving informational speeches. Students will see writing as a vehicle for change as they work to persuade others. This unit focuses on topics related to Science and Social Studies.
Second Grade- Quarter Two UNIT 3- Write like a Scientist The focus of this unit is to encourage students not just to write like a scientist, but to also do the work of a scientist. They will learn to record, to question, to hypothesize, and to observe and teach others. Students will be encouraged to follow the scientific process of making a hypothesis, conducting experiments, recording observations through writing and sketches, collecting data, and drawing conclusions. They will write a second grade version of a lab report. UNIT 4- Report and Research Writing The focus of this unit is teaching others about a familiar topic that they are an ‘expert' on. Students begin with their prior knowledge of a self-selected topic and learn how to integrate scientific information, key words, definitions, and comparisons to describe. Students learn how to show the reader information in small steps to make it clear and how to incorporate a variety of text features in their writing. They learn how to write introductions and conclusions and how to organize their writing into chapters or sections using a table of contents. Students work on building writing stamina by writing more and more. Second Grade- Quarter Four
UNIT 7- Opinion Writing- Persuasive Reviews In this unit, students that we often read reviews in our daily lives to help us make decisions about which books to read, what movies to see, restaurants to try, places to go, and products to buy. Students will learn how to write reviews for books they have read, movies they have seen, and restaurants or places they have been. They will learn how to express their opinion about a topic and then provide reasons and examples in order to persuade their readers to want to read, see, or try whatever they are reviewing. UNIT 8- Imaginative Writing In this unit, students will learn that fairy tales are another type of writing genre. They will connect what they have learned about narrative writing to fairy tales. Students will use the structure of a fairy tales which includes characters talking to each other and a narrator talking to the audience. Students will use their fairy tales to teach the reader a lesson. |
