First Grade- Quarter One
UNIT 1: Building Good Reading Habits During this unit students and teachers will establish procedures for learning during mini lessons, turning and talking with partners, independent reading and partner reading. Readers will learn different ways to read texts and build stamina while reading independently. Readers will learn to retell both narrative and informational text. UNIT 2: Tackling The Tricky Parts This unit equips early readers to decode unfamiliar words with a variety of strategies. Students are introduced to Read to Someone in the Daily 5 framework. Partnerships work together to coach each other through tricky word strategies and retelling a text. |
First Grade- Quarter 2
UNIT 3: Connecting With Characters We will work on retelling stories and move to noticing what a character does in a story. After practicing this, students will think more deeply about a character's patterns of behavior, consider how a character feels and how he/she changes throughout a story using pictures and words as evidence. UNIT 4: Understanding Informational Text In this unit, students will discover how to learn about the world through reading. The technical vocabulary can make this a tricky unit for young readers. Readers will move from identifying informational texts to establishing the main topic,retelling and asking questions about what they are learning. |
First Grade- Quarter Three
UNIT 5: Being A Resourceful Reader This unit will review and build upon all of the strategies sutdent have learned thus far. It is important to review strategies at this point in the year because reading levels are increasing, so books have fewer pictures and more complex story-lines. Informational text at this level will have more specific vocabulary. Mini-lesson will address comprehension and critical thinking as students are often reminded to think about what would make sense based on what they have read so far. UNIT 6: Exploring Genres This unit aims to introduce students to the idea that there are connections across books and a variety of genres. Students will learn that they are learning to read but they can also read to learn about the world around them. Reread texts will be an important emphasis during this unit because student will need to view a text from different lenses- to enjoy, to learn, to understand new vocabulary, and interpret confusing or complex part.
Fry High Frequency Word List- This list contains the first 100 most commonly used words. The link also contains flashcards for the words. Students should be able to identify all 100 of these words by the end of First grade within 3 seconds by sight. They should not have to sound out High Frequency Words.

First Grade- Quarter Four
UNIT 7: Dramas and Book Clubs In this unit, the goals are to help readers envision as they read, work on increasing fluency, gain a richer level of comprehension and share this understand with other. Reading need to synthesize all they know about characters and story-lines to develop a deeper level of comprehension. UNIT 8: Research This unit transforms your students into budding scientists. Student will be grouped arouind topics studying with focus, developing technical vocabulary, asking questions, discussing hypotheses and comparing and contrasting texts on the same subject. This units is as much about learning and researching a topic as it is about developing a way of thinking and looking at the world. Second Grade- Quarter One
Unit 1: Own Your Reading You will begin the unit by reminding children that they need to develop habits as readers and they need to read often. Students will have to make a lot of choices about what to read and how to read texts on their own this year. Students will help to establish clear procedures and expectations for whole group, independent, and partner work. A primary focus of this unit is to teach students how to ask and answer questions while reading narrative and then informational text. Unit 2: Tackling Tricky Parts This unit will encourage and show students how to be observant readers. Students will notice different ways authors of narrative text convey meaning and feelings (e.g., illustrations, rhymes, repeated lines, powerful word choice). In addition, they will notice ways authors of informational text convey information through images (e.g., photographs, diagrams, maps, charts). Students will understand that good readers expect that there will be hard parts when reading a book. When they encounter these hard parts good readers "roll up their sleeves" and use a variety of strategies to read and understand both narrative and informational text. Second Grade- Quarter Three Unit 5: Connecting More Deeply With Characters In this unit the focus shifts from informational texts to fictional texts. Students will focus on characters and how readers connect to them. In week one, students will learn to carefully attend to characters and notice how they respond to what happens in the plot. Week two will move students from thinking about character's actions and responses, to considering their feelings. Students will also learn more about affixes and how they impact how words work. The second half of the unit focuses on characters' points of view. Unit 6: Sharing Books and Ideas in Reading Clubs: The structure of book clubs will be introduced in this unit. Using the book club format as a vehicle, students will explore comparing and contrasting of fictional and informational texts. In addition to instruction and practice on comparing and contrasting, students will also learn strategies to build accuracy and fluency. |
Second Grade- Quarter Two
Unit 3: Reading Informational Text, Reading the World Students will continue to focus on informational texts and will continue to learn strategies to support their reading. This unit is closely aligned with Social Studies and Science. Students will begin by learning more about author's purpose, followed by further investigation of text features. Readers will expand vocabulary by noticing and learning content specific words and will revisit comparing/contrasting informational texts on the same topic. Unit 4: Readers Develop Expertise in Science/Social Studies This unit will encourage readers to read for the authentic purpose of learning about a topic(s) in Science/Social Studies. Readers will be motivated by their own interests and curiosity. At the beginning of the unit, students will learn to read informational texts deeply and collect information about a topic. Readers will then broaden their understanding of their topic by comparing/contrasting various texts on the same topic. Finally, they will learn to further engage in the text by asking power questions as they read. Second Grade- Quarter Four Unit 7: Taking a Deeper Look at Informational Text in Clubs This unit will continue students' work in book clubs. However, in this unit book clubs will be created based on common interests. Book club partners will come together because they want to learn more about a certain topic, perhaps one that they have already read about. Book clubs will work cooperatively, with specific roles for collecting information and developing new understanding. Essential book club structures and procedures will remain the same as those in Unit 6. Big ideas in this unit focus on learning about topics through informational texts in a cooperative setting. Many of the themes and standards addressed have been introduced before. At this point in the year students will be deepening and expanding their understanding of concepts previously introduced. When launching book clubs it will be important to remember:
Unit 8: Performing with Fiction, Folktales, and Fairy Tales: This final unit in the year provides students the chance to pull together many of the skills and strategies that they have learned. During this unit, students will be reading fictional texts and thinking about how reading can turn into performing. By adding in the element of performance, students can explore retelling, point of view, and fluency. In addition, students will revisit character exploration and will think about the reading/writing connection, as they write their own reader's theater scripts. Students will explore a variety of genres, including folktales and fairy tales. |
